Apollo

Apollo was the son of Zeus and Leto, and the twin brother of Artemis. He was a very important god, worshipped all over Greece.

As well as Helios, Apollo was the god of the sun, and of radiant sunlight with all its beneficial powers - helping crops to grow, ripening fruit, banishing the dark of night.

Music and poetry

He was also the god of music and poetry, and is often shown with the kithara he played (a sort of harp - see picture right). His symbols are also the bow and arrow.

Oracles

Apollo was also the god of oracles and prophecy. His most famous sanctuary is Delphi, where Greeks would visit to ask advice on important questions, such as how to win a war. After performing sacred rites, the priestess of Apollo would receive the answer from the god.
