Lesson Plan: Drawing

Morning (beginning 9:45)

  • Introduction to Still Life - the content and style of still lifes - the plan of the day

  • Seeing - an activity intended to teach children how to see objects as they appear to the eye - how to observe details of shapes

  • The basic approach to realistic drawing: look, draw, check, adjust

  • Drawing Lines - drawing the underlying shapes of things with a pencil, with a focus on angles, ellipses, proportion, and symmetry - including games (taking turns to correct faulty drawings) and correcting own drawing of the cup

  • Drawing real life objects (a plastic cup) - perspective (seeing 3D objects as they appear to the eye) - draw the real cup

  • Pick three objects and draw outlines - I give one-on-one guidance

  • Review

Afternoon

  • Seeing tone - areas of dark and light, in photos, art, and real objects

  • Tone practice - using pencils, charcoal, charcoal pencils, putty erasers, fingers, and white chalk to get varying levels of dark and light - blending using fingers

  • Demonstration of how to create tone for a spherical object (photo of a baseball)

  • Practise shading of baseball

  • Demonstration of how to create tone for a cylindrical object (photo of a jug)

  • Practise shading of jug

  • Shade three objects (using outlines created in the morning) - I give one-on-one guidance

  • Review
