Bes was a strange-looking god of families and war. He helped Taweret protect women and babies during childbirth. He was also popular with women in other ways and his image is often found on mirror handles and cosmetic boxes. He was also a guardian of sleep and his figure is found on bed heads (including one found in Tutankhamun's tomb).

Bes protected against evil spirits, and dangerous creatures such as snakes and scorpions. A family might place a little stone stela with the image of Bes alongside magic spells.

Bes was a playful god who liked to make music with a harp or tambourine.

Bes has the body of a dwarf, with features like a  lion, a sticking-out tongue, and a beard.
