Hieroglyphs |
When was hieroglyphic invented?
Egyptian hieroglyphic is the first writing ever used, along with Sumerian. Sumerian comes from Sumer, which is now southern Iraq. Historians used to think that the Egyptians got the idea of writing from the Sumerians, but it seems the two ways of writing came about separately. Both were invented about 3,500 BC, that is, 5,500 years ago. Amazing fact: once hieroglyphic took its final form, about 2900BC, it stayed almost the same until it finally died out in about 400 AD. That's 3,300 years! No other written language has ever lasted so long. The Egyptians themselves believes that writing was invented and given to them by the god, Thoth.
